Katie,

There are many sources on the internet, both technical and not-so technical. One of the best non-technical sites centers around household waste:

       rec-haz
Also, you might try a search on hazardous waste and check out some of the sites. My environmental chemistry class is designed for college students who have had very little exposure to chemistry (business majors, etc.). We use a book called "Chemistry for Changing Times" by Hill, J.W. and Kolb. You might try finding a copy of this book or a similar basic chemistry book to find some basic discussion of chemical waste and its associated problems.

Some of the worst waste sites in the country are owned by the government's Department of Energy (also known as the DOE). A discussion of these sites can be found at:

       Waste Info
This site has a lot of technical and non-technical info mixed together.

One last site... which will expose you to many topics about toxic waste:

       Toxic Waste
Good luck!

Dr. T
