Victoria,

Climatology isn't one of my biggest areas but I'll give it try. Yes, there
are fewer people out on the oceans to report lightning strikes. But I do 
believe that there is more lightning over land anyways due to the fact that
over the oceans, the weather patterns are more stable. Sure you get some
pretty killer storms such as hurricanes and typhoons, but over the land, there
are certainly more variations in patterns which would cause lightning to be
more drastic over these areas. Hope that helps a little.
