Hi Rena,

Ectoplasm is one of my favorite substances. In your reading you probably came across the word cytoplasm which is the fluid and solute- laden interior of the cell, specifically the region outside of the nucleus. Cytoplasm can be further subdivided into two regions ectoplasm a more 'liquid' and solute-carrying part, and endoplasm which tends to have a more 'gel-like' state. Ecto- means 'outside' and endo - inside. The ectoplasm is found closer to the cell membrane, the 'outer' region of the cell where molecules and other factors are taken up from the exterior or are transported from within the cell to the outside world, thus the greater need for fluidity to better ease impending traffic jams.

I hope this answers your question.
