Mark, Believe it or not water is very sticky. So, when gravity from the moon pulls the water to one side of the earth, the other side is left without it. The particles that make up water, called atoms, are very happy to stay together, causing the sticky effect. At high tide, the moon is on your side of the globe. When low tide occurs, the moon is on the opposite side of your shore, 1/4 tides the moon is on its way away or on its way back to your side. Mass is a great state; hope you get to do some sailing before the winter hits. Hope this helps. Bob
