A quote from "Grizzly Bear", by Fred Bunnell (Univ. of British Columbia),
in _All the Worlds Animals--Carnivores_, Torstar Books, 1984:

"The range sizes of adult females can vary enormously from region to
region; for example, 5.5 sq. mi. on an Alaskan island to 73 sq. mi.
in northern Alberta. Comparable figures for adult males are 9.4 sq. mi.
to 406 sq. mi. Young females may remain in the mother's range after
leaving her care--three generations of females have been known in the
same range. Adult males are solitary, and their ranges encompass those
of several adult females, as well as overlapping with other adult males."

I highly recommend the _All the World's Animals_ series--there is a
separate volume for each order of mammals, with each known species
covered in some detail. I don't know if it is still in print.
