The SIMPLE answer is that the wind blows on the blades of big propellors and this pushes wires past magnets in the generator which generates electricity in them. You can do experiments with toy generators to show this.

The reason that wind electric machines are designed the way they are is very interesting. They are trying to "catch" as much wind as possible. To do this they must have long blades which moves very fast. Did you know that a cube of air which is 100 paces by 100 paces by 100 paces weighs as much as a train? When it is slowed down by windmill blades it gives up a lot of energy.
