Well, another attempt to prove that science teacher incorrect. This question seems
to be an issue of semantics. Matter is necessary to carry sound. Sound is, at its
most basic level, the motion of particles. In the quantum mechanical picture, the energy
of vibration of atoms or molecules is described by phonons. Phonons are a quanta(packet) of energy
that can be treated like a particle (i.e. matter). So, if your teacher says sound is matter, he is
not wrong, but you may not have seen all the information that is behind that statement.
