Hi Flat-footer,

Flat feet occur when the arch of the foot is absent, causing the sole to rest flat on the ground. Almost everyone is born with flat feet, though the arch forms gradually as supportive ligaments and muscles in the soles of the feet develop during the first five or six years of life. Sometimes, however, the ligaments and muscles are weak (for no obvious cause), and the feet remain flat. A much less common cause is a hereditary defect in the small bones of the foot.

Flat feet may be acquired in adult life because of fallen arches due to a rapid increase in weight, or to a weakening of the muscles and ligaments, which occurs in certain neurological or muscular disorders.

Most cases of congenital flat feet are painless and require no treatment, although abnormalities of the bones might need correction. Acquired flat feet (i.e. in adults) may cause aching, in which case treatment consists of wearing arch supports inside the shoes, and performing exercises to strengthen the weakened muscles and ligaments.
