Baldness is affected by age, genetics and hormone levels. In particular, the male hormone testosterone must be present in order for male pattern baldness to occur, which his why baldness is more common in men than women, and why it begins after puberty. The tendency to go bald early runs in families, and is an inherited trait, so a man with relatives who bald early is more likely to go bald early himself.
