Dear Les,
An excellent question; I wish I were better informed about this
condition. This subject is a major focus for research at this minute!
One must monitor published reports almost daily to be current on the
latest developments in this increasingly common and ultimately fatal
dementia. The first reference examines the cellular transport effects
of beta-amyloid (the most common protein in these neurite plaques) on
fibroblasts in tissue culture. The authors' report this plaque protein
produces Alzheimer-like changes in fibroblast membrane channels
identical to those observed in cells from Alzheimer patients. So the
answer may be YES, but medical science just doesn't know yet. If you
will utilize all of Internet's references on Alzheimer's Disease (there
are thousands) you will become your school's "Alzheimer guru." Remember
that Internet is just a list of information; it does not imply the
QUALITY of these research results!
Good luck in your life-long learning.
Sincerely,
Scott
