MadSci Network: Evolution |
First, lets be clear on the connotations of "belief". As a Christian, I believe in some ideas that common sense and science are unable to address or verify, and as a Christian biologist, like biologists from other faiths and points of view, I came to my acceptance of the modern evolutionary viewpoint, essentially the same as Darwin's ideas with later additions and refinements, not by faith but by a carefully considered examination of the evidence (and what an extraordinary huge and convincing mass of evidence life and its fossilized remains presents with!). So, any scientists that tries to sell evolution to the public as a belief, unconstrained by the evidence, is violating the ethics of honesty, which is the foundation of science. (Not all scientists are perfect, but ultimately the pursuing of science is futile unless it is done with absolute honesty.) Would you ask the same question in regards to physics or geology? You are correct to percieve fashions in science, and some fashions are found to be erroneous, but over the long haul science is self correcting, and plenty of time has elapsed to test the veracity of the central evolutionary ideas. Something that is initially very unpopular (like plate tectonics in geology) eventually gathers strength and is widely accepted by virtue of its explanatory power... how well it explains and renders comprehensible the complexity of nature. To get to your first question, the only people who oppose the evolutionary view of life's development do so out of ideological dogmatism or out of lack of knowledge. My guess would be that over 95% of biologists are evolutionists, and my personal observation is that most vocal creationists have not been trained in biology (perhaps chemistry, physics, geology, etc). I hope this answers your question.
