What you're suggesting, as far as the use of gyros for turning aircraft, is certainly possible. I don't claim to be any kind of aeronautics expert (nor could I find any, unfortunately), but it seems to me that the major trouble with your idea would involve the loss of both lift and stability resulting from removal of wings. I understand that gyros are already being used on space stations for navigation. You must also consider in your calculations whether "instantaneous turning" might be a bit much for the average passenger to tolerate; in a helicopter, sure, but in a 747? I strongly suggest that you learn as much as you can from Web pages such as NASA and Jet Propulsion Labs (JPL) government agencies. I'm sure scientists at both places love to think of such prospects. You also may want to check out the US Patent Office (patents) through the Web or a library, to see what ideas like this have been protected. As far as grants, the two biggest funding agencies for aviation are probably DOD (Department of Defense) and ONR (Office of Naval Research). They have Web sites which may allow you to search by subject on what they fund. Still, for a model airplane, it could be fun and not incredibly expensive. Good luck!
