Subject: Where do hornets go in the winter when they vacate their nests?

Every time we see a hornets' nest in the woods in winter, it is empty.  
They only stay in the nest 1 year, we understand.  Where do they go in 
the winter before they come and build a new nest the next summer?  Do 
they migrate to South America, go underground, all die out, what?
