Silicon does not exist in a pure state in nature.  It is found most
commonly as its oxide, SiO2.  Silicon dioxide is more commonly known as 
"sand".

Silicon is also found in many kinds of rocks and minerals, from quartz to
granite.  It's also found in coffee whitener, which is why it's such a 
wonder folks still use it!
