    The identity of the "first" person to observe the visible spectrum 
will forever remain a mystery since this observation occurred in ancient 
times.

    The visible spectrum occurs often naturally.  A rainbow is a leading 
example.  You can also see the spectrum if you view light through a clear 
diamond or a clear piece of quartz.  One also sees the spectrum in an oil 
film on water.
