Dear Alex,

That was an excellent observation on your part to notice that many people
open their mouths when they place their contact lenses on their eyes. Did
you also notice that when people spoon feed babies they also open their own
mouths as if that would help the baby eat? Also, when some people
concentrate very hard on doing a particular task, they stick the tip of
their tongue out just a bit, so that it protrudes between their lips. They
may also "furrow their brows."

There is no good reason for making any of these faces. They do not assist
in performing the tasks, but people do so anyway.

So, unfortunately, there is no answer to your question that would explain
why many people open their mouth when placing their contact lens in.
