To find a cure for a particular disease, it is important to find out what is causing the disease in the first place. Some diseases, like tonsilitis and tuberculosis, are caused by particular types of bacteria, which can be killed with antibiotics. Other diseases, like polio and the flu, are caused by viruses, which are harder to kill because they hide inside our own cells. Many diseases can be fought with our own immune system, which is the body's natural defense to infections. Many diseases can be prevented by immunization, which helps our immune system recognise a particular virus or bacteria, and kill it before it can cause disease.
