Message:
Cytokines are extracellular signaling proteins or peptides that act as
a local mediator in cell to cell communication. The communication
involves regulating proliferation (division) and differentiation of cells.
The importance of such "social controls" on cell division becomes
apparent when the controls fail, resulting in cancer.
