We down under think that Franklin's crucial discovery of static electricity wa in 1752. We also think that it is a bit much to say he "discovered" electricity as Volta and Ampere both did work on DC electricity before this. Benjamin really just extended and applied pre-existing inventrion, such as Leyden Jars.
