Hi Tam,

Pepcid is the brand name for Famotidine, which is a compound belonging to
a group of chemicals called H2 blockers. Tagamet (Cimetidine) was, I
think, the first of these to be commercially available, and revolutionised
the treatment of acid-related stomach problems.

Basically, they work by blocking the chemical pathway in the cells lining
the stomach which leads to acid production, hence directly reduce the
amount of acid in the stomach.

Since heartburn is caused by the effect of stomach acid on the sensitive
lining of the lower part of the gullet (esophagus), and spicy foods seem
to stimulate the production of acid, then clearly any reduction in acid
production will reduce the symptoms of heartburn.

There are now even more powerful blockers of acid production called Proton
Pump Inhibitors (PPIs), which reduce acid levels even further, and all
these medicines have virtually done away with the need for surgery in
cases of stomach and duodenal ulcers.

What I don't know, however, is whether long-term acid suppression in those
people who take these medications is harmful or not.

Hope this helps

Best wishes

Doc C-P
