Moisture(water vapor) is critical in the lungs as a solvent for surfactant which maintains the integrity of the alveoli, the site of gas exchange from the atmosphere to the bloodstream. Also, the pulmonary gas exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide would not occur without the two gases dissolving in water before passing across the alvelolar membrane. We are not only mostly composed of water but totally dependent on it to maintain life.
