The term fiddlehead refers to a developmental stage of ferns as their new 
growth emerges.  The leaf of a fern is called a frond.  The fronds are 
fully developed when they emerge and are folded  and curled in the shape of 
the top of a violin to protect the frond.  Here is a picture of a 
fiddlehead:
