Emily,

Hemorrhoids are dilated veins, the same as varicosities. When the veins are around
the rectum and anus they are referred to as hemorrhoids. They develop as a result
of gravity and increased intraabdominal pressure. They are particularly prevalent
during pregnancy.

If the vein thromboses and develops a clot then that can cause a lot of pain.
Sometimes an internal hemorroid can prolapse or fall out through the anus. That
also causes a lot of pain. Sometimes it can be pushed back into place.

Hemorrhoids can be treated by a variety of surgical techniques. Otherwise, it is
helpful to keep the stools soft and avoid straining at stool.
