On the verge of extinction 25 years ago, the peregrine falcon has made a remarkable recovery thanks to protection in the wild, captive breeding/ release programs and perhaps most importantly, the banning of the pesticide DDT, which weakens the birds' eggshells. There had even been discussion of removing the bird from the endangered species list.
