Two of my 7th grade students are studying the effects on plants of pollution blocking of stomates. To view stomates, they applied nail polish to the bottom of a leaf, and, when dry, pealed off the leaf layer with scotch tape and looked at the tape under 400x magnification in the microscope. They clearly were able to see the stomates, some open, others closed. They then looked at the slide several minutes later, and said that they thought that a higher percent of the stomates were now closed. Do you think it would be possible for stomates to close in this condition? Thanks for listening. Susan Herzog
