Hi Michael,

There can't be a general form for the breaking stresses for your problem. 
The material is not homogeneous for one thing, its kind of sintered 
construction will make definitive analysis hard if not impossible.

The only thing that might help would be to get some friendly mechanical or 
civil engineering department to do some finite element analysis for some 
typical cases, I suppose that live coral behaves differently to dead 
corals, so any real testing would be very hard.

Somethings are still beyond the powers of analysis.
