Subject: Function of Structure?

Dear Sir/Madame,

 Recently I saw two movies, both about time travel/travel to other 
dimensions by means of worm-holes (Contact, Event Horizon).
 In both movies there were simular structures that served as a 
transport device. I'll try to explain the design as best as I can. 
It's three rings each within the other and each circling on a 
different axis.
 I know this might seem like science fiction but science fiction 
mostly leads to science fact. So now I am wondering if such a 
structure or device exists or if the blueprints exist and travel is 
theoretically possible but our technology is not as advanced as yet 
and if so how far away are we?
