Naphthylacetic acid and indolybutyric acid are both members of a family of chemicals refered to as auxin mimics. They mimic the effects of the naturally occuring auxin, indoleacetic acid. Auxins are chemicals produced in the plant which effect plant development such as shoot growth, root growth and bud initiation. Naphthylacetic acid and indolybutyric acid are primarily used to stimulate root formation of plant cuttings. Napthylacetic acid is also used to prevent premature flower and fruit drop on fruit trees.
