Chronic(long-term) substance abuse tends to increase one's tolerance to
anesthetics through a metabolic process called enzyme induction chiefly in
the liver cells. As a result the dosage of anesthetics either IV or
inhalational is increased. Acute intoxication tends to decrease the dosage
of anesthetics needed. Two extremely dangerous acute situations involve
cocaine and heroin intoxications and general anesthesia in which death from
cardiac arrest can occur. One week after occasional drug use will have
little or no effect on the conduct of general anesthesia.
