Well, I'd never heard about ears ringing when one is being talked about - I
always thought the saying went that one's ears were burning. And certainly,
being talked about was not listed as a cause of ringing in the ears in any
source I could find!

The medical term for that ringing is tinnitus, and it can have any number
of causes. Some people actually experience it so severely that the
condition requires a medical workup and treatment, but most of us
experience it to a limited and tolerable degree at some time or other. It
can be caused by sounds in your own body, a clogged ear, damaged cilia in
the ear, or drug toxicity (aspirin is a common culprit), among other
things. I am copying for you the addressses of a few websites that go into
a little more detail about tinnitus and its causes - but be aware that
those sites do focus on the more severe forms of it. Hope this is helpful!
