Subject: How do you talk with lasers?

I wanted to know how to talk with lasers. See comps record what you 
say in binary. So a would make a prog that would take the 0's and 1 
and turn it into laser pulses where a 1 nano second pulse is a 0 and 
where a 2 nano second pulse is a 1. A receiver would make a 1 or 2 
nano second pulses into binary then a comp would output sound.
I need to know if this is possible or is there any other way.
