Subject: From pattern recognition to image enhancement software?

Seems like a leap of faith? I mean some people look at a cloud 
formation and see the image of christ, others see a cat, others a 
cloud formation. Some people look at the future and know what computer 
technology to learn. A concrete example would be during the 1992 
Los Angeles riots, the felon who threw the brick that hit 
reginald denny had a tattoo, as picked up on video by the 
helicopter overhead. But it couldn't make out the tattoo, but 
using image enhancing software, they made out a rose tattoo, and 
not a four leaf clover for instance and they had their man. please 
explain.
