Hello, Frank. You have asked an amazing question, for someone at your age. I will try to answer you, and hope I make the answer clear enough. You might want to think of the universe as having 2 things: 1) matter and 2) energy Matter can have 3 forms - gas, liquid, or solid. So, the objects around you, like the furniture in the room, are "matter". Water is a liquid. Look around the room you are in. If you think of the space inside your room - you can see through it to the walls or furniture around it. But that space is not empty - it has air in it. Air is a gas that you cannot see - but you can feel that it is there, by feeling a breeze when you turn on a fan in the room. There also is some energy in the room. Energy is a bit harder to explain, so let me start with examples. If you can see the furniture or the walls in the room, then there is light in the room. Light is one type of energy. If you say something, then you have sent sound into the room. Sound is another type of energy. If you have a television or radio on in the room, and it is working - then the television or radio is receiving radio waves. So, there are radio waves in the room. Radio waves are like light waves, but invisible. Energy can be thought of as something that can move or change things. When you pick up a book, you are using energy. When you throw a ball, you are using energy. When the ball hits a window and breaks it, the energy you put into the ball by throwing it went with the ball as kinetic energy (the energy of motion), then made a change in the window. Oh, by the way - please don't do what I just described. Just imagine doing it. Thanks. When light energy hits your eye, it makes changes in matter inside your eye. These changes allow you to "see". In fact, the different colors of light, red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and violet, are different frequencies of light. Light with just a bit lower frequency than red light is called "infrared". We cannot see infrared light, but can feel it as heat. Energy with a lower frequency than infrared is called microwave - the type of energy used in a microwave oven. Energy with a higher frequency than blue light is called ultraviolet. These are the "black lights" that you might find at some parties or in some stores, that make parts of some people's clothes seem to glow. So, light is a form of energy, which you can see - but there are forms of energy like light that you cannot see, like radio waves, microwaves, infrared, ultraviolet, and x-rays. Space is just emptyness. If you took all the air out of the room you are in, and were somehow still able to breathe - say, you were wearing the type of suit an astronaut wears - well, you would be in a vacuum. But, since you could see - there would still be light energy in the room. If you turned off all the lights, the dark, empty room with no air would be a lot like space.
