While I have not yet seen all of the movie Contact or read the book by the 
same name by the late Carl Sagan, I believe that Self Reinforcing 
DElusion can be explained.  This is not in my field but in the field of 
psychology or psychiatry. It most likely was used in the movie to tell 
Jodie Foster (when they didn't believe her) that she was fooling herself 
(delusion) and reinforcing her thoughts in her own mind through her 
paranoia or other states of mind.
