It seems to me the very nature of a metal depends on the electrons of
neighboring atoms be in close proximity to each other so the electrons
can "float" from atom to atom to stay at a low energy. Making the
metal a gas would remove all possible interactions. Wouldn't this be
approaching something akin to "plasma"?
