Who first found out about molecules?

Molecules were first proposed as a way of explaining the fact that, when chemical reactions occur, things always combine in definite proportions.

The proposal was part of John Dalton's revival of atoms in 1803. Dalton proposed that chemical elements are made of atoms, which combine to form the molecules of compounds. His 1808 book A New System of Chemical Philosophy summarized and expanded his ideas, which were further developed by other chemists down to our own day.
