  Man-made elements are so unstable because man only creates materials 
that nature does not provide itself.  Nature DOES make unstable 
elements and compounds but, because they are unstable, the compounds and 
elements degrade and/or combine to form more stable elements and 
compounds.  As my 9th grade science teacher was so fond of saying (and 
probally still says to this day), NATURE SEEKS STABILITY.
