Pompeii was a reasonable-sized city in the Roman Empire, which kept very good
records. It is mentioned in quite a number of contemporary records, and its
destruction was recorded in an account by an eyewitness, Pliny the Younger. (His
father, Pliny the Elder, was observing the eruption and was killed by the
fumes!)
