Dear Jeanne,
That's an unusual one - certainly I'd never come across it before. There 
are some recorded hypersensitivity (immune) reactions to gold reported in 
the literature. But nothing I could find that links such reactions to iron 
level. It would be good if you could test the students' iron level and see 
if there was a correlation with the marking, but I don't know if that type 
of activity would be allowable where you are.
