At 16+ level

As far as I can tell there is no reaction directly between a Nitrate and 
Sulphate ion to produce a stable compound. You may however be thinking 
about a reaction between Conc Nitric Acid HNO3 and Conc Sulphuric acid 
where the stronger acid (sulphuric) protonates the Nitric acid and the 
resultant cation beaks down to form water and the NO2+ or Nitronium ion.
This ion is responsible for the electrophillic substitution reactions of 
arene (benzene ring )derivatives. As both acids have H+ ions you could 
argue that it is the anions that cause the reaction. It is tenuous though.
