I am an AmeriCorps student,studying to be a teacher, and working 
in an elementary classroom.  The students asked me this 
question, and I really had no idea how to answer them, and any 
searching I've done on the Internet has been in vain.  I assume 
some things, but I'd love a scientific explination the kids can 
understand.  Thanks.
