MadSci Network: Chemistry |
Update 11/28/2005:
The web now offers a number of sites describing and showing pictures of g-orbitals. For a view of what's present, try a search on Google's Image Locator for "g-orbital"

Rebecca,
I have been unable to find a pictorial representation of g orbitals to post for you. However, there is a nice web site which gives views of atomic orbitals in color: http://www.albany.net/~cprimus/orb/ov.htm (11/28/2005 - link now defunct). This site gives you color pictures of orbitals grouped by their quantum numbers. When you get to this site click on the link to the Grand Table which will list them all. The orbitals are identified by their quantum number n (for s n=1, for p n=2, and so on; for g orbitals, n = 5). The site also has links for downloading software what will allow you to animate them and draw any atom or molecule you wish. Have fun!
