I have a multidude of explanations on this subject, but most of 
them do not seem to make a whole lot of sense.  I have to perform 
an experiment soon and I would like to give a thorough 
explanation on this matter.  I will need a better definition than  
"not containing water" because I know that.  That can't be all 
can it?
