Martina,

The answer to this question resides in the geographical origin of various human populations. Fine and straight hair is common among Europeans while a more coarse and straight hair is common among Native Americans and Asians. The hair type of Melanesians and Sub-Saharan Africans is often referred to as being woolly. These hair varieties may have been selected for for having some benefit in their particular environment. For example, woolly hair may have had some advantage for insulation. Sexual selection may also play a role. In other words, in this case individuals with hair forms which are culturally favored mate and reproduce more often leading to the prevalence of certain forms in certain geographical areas.
