There are chemicals in the spoon which contain chemical bonds or 
connections that are capable of absorbing light in the visible spectrum, 
hence they are coloured. As the temperature changes the bonds change 
slightly in nature and the colour of light absorbed changes with it.

There is a much more complicatede answer involving chromophores and 
auxochromes but is suspect this is beyond grade 4-6
PS A I am writing this in the UK I am assuming grade 4-6 in the US is ages 
14 to 16?
