Dear Sean,

A beam splitter is a partially silvered mirror which allows you to divide a beam of light into two parts, one which reflects off of the mirror and one which goes through it. A beam spreader is a sytem of lenses which takes a beam of light and makes it wider. A good place to find optics supplies for science projects is Edmund Scientific which also sells a short manual on how to make holgrams. There is also a nice web page at www.holostudios.com that talks about the science and art of holography. I hope this gives you a place to start.

Larry
