MadSci Network: Botany |
We are talking about chemical reactions. Usually a chemical reaction takes femtoseconds to occur, but in this case, several reactions have to be catalized in sequence ant this takes more time. It is hard to study a living cell but there are some approaches for this kind of study that gives us an idea of how fast it happens. If you give radioactive carbon (CO2 labeled with C14) to a plant, you will find this radioactive carbon in proteins, sugars, lipids in only one minute. If you decrease the time for as little as 2 seconds, you will find some carbon already fixed in an organic form. It is hard to go further due to technical limitations, but, belive me, it is very fast. If you have further questions, let me know. Bye, Marco.
