For a bird , a nest isn't the same as a three-bedroom ranch -- it's a place to keep eggs and babies safe until they're grown. So nests are only used when birds are having babies. When a grownup bird has babies to protect, it will return to its nest and sleep in it. But the rest of the time they can sleep wherever they like. Many birds sleep perched on branches, far away from most predators. Others sleep standing on the shore, or while floating in the water, or even while flying! How do they manage that? Most birds can let half their brains sleep while the other half is awake! Diane Kelly
