Hi nameless inquisitor,
I looked around on the web for a whispering gallery near the cleveland area
and I didn't find one.
However there is one in St. Louis at the St. Louis Union Station Mall and
there is also one at the
Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago.
Probably the most famous whispering gallery in the
western world is at St. Paul's Cathedral in London, England. The
US Capitol building
also has an area that acts like a whipsering gallery.
For those not familiar with a whipsering gallery, the most general form is a room that has an ellipical ceiling. As stated in http://www.cedarville.edu/%7Esellersj/newconics, In rooms whose ceilings are elliptical, a sound made at one focus of the ellipse will be reflected to the other focus (across the room), allowing people standing at the two foci to hear one another very clearly. This has been called the ``whispering gallery'' effect and has been used by many in the design of special rooms. In particular, St. Paul's Cathedral and one of the rooms at the United States Capitol were built with this in mind.
An interesting aside: "whispering gallery" modes are used in miniaturizing lasers and in some microwave transmitters.
Here is a list of links that mention whispering gallery.
Sincerely,
Tom "Cannot Whisper" Cull
