Electrolysis is the process of performing a chemical reaction using an 
electric current, so the current is essential.  You can consider the 
electrons as a reagent.  For example, in electrodeposition of Cu+2 + 2e 
---> Cu, it takes two electrons to reduce every atom of Cu+2.
